Three tools, one small puncture
A catheter is a thin, flexible tube. It is guided through the artery to the narrowed spot. Doctors call this endovascular treatment — working from inside the blood vessel.
Angioplasty
A small balloon is inflated inside the narrowed artery to widen it, then removed.
Atherectomy
A device on the catheter shaves away plaque (the fatty buildup) from the artery wall.
Stenting
A stent — a small mesh tube — is placed to hold the artery open.
Who it is for
These procedures are for people with peripheral artery disease (PAD) when symptoms limit daily life or are not improving with medical therapy — for example leg pain when walking that keeps you from your normal routine — or when poor blood flow is keeping a leg or foot wound from healing.
Not everyone with PAD needs a procedure. Many patients improve significantly with a structured exercise program, medication, and risk-factor control. The decision is made with you after the leg circulation check.
How it works
What happens on the day
This is the usual sequence. Your own instructions come from our team before the procedure.
-
01
Before you come in
You receive instructions about eating, drinking, and your medications — especially blood thinners and diabetes medicines. Arrange for someone to drive you home.
-
02
Numbing and light sedation
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and light sedation. You are relaxed but not put fully to sleep.
-
03
A small puncture, not an incision
The catheter goes in through a small puncture in the groin or wrist and is guided to the leg artery using X-ray and contrast dye.
-
04
Opening the artery
The doctor uses angioplasty, atherectomy, a stent, or a combination, depending on what the artery needs.
-
05
Recovery and going home
You rest while the team watches the puncture site. Most patients return home the same day and resume walking quickly.
Where it is done
Procedures are performed at amavita’s dedicated ambulatory surgery center, co-located at our Kendall office — 9408 SW 87th Ave, Suite 303, Miami, FL 33176. An ambulatory surgery center is an outpatient facility: you come in, have the procedure, recover, and go home, without a hospital admission.
For cases requiring hospital admission, Dr. Martinez-Clark has attending privileges at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital and Jackson Memorial.
Consultations and follow-up visits are at either office: Kendall or North Miami Beach.
After the procedure
Opening the artery is one part of the care. Continued risk-factor management — not smoking, walking, and the medicines your doctor prescribes — protects the result. Follow-up visits check that blood is still flowing well.
Like any procedure, this one has risks, including bleeding or bruising at the puncture site and effects of the contrast dye on the kidneys. Dr. Martinez-Clark reviews your individual risks with you before you decide.
