Leg Swelling in Miami: Causes, Evaluation, and Treatment
Swelling in one or both legs that lingers into the evening, worsens after standing, or leaves an indentation when you press your skin is a common warning sign of vein disease — and sometimes of heart or kidney conditions that also deserve evaluation.
Common symptoms
- Ankles or lower legs that look puffy by the end of the day
- Skin indents when pressed and takes seconds to bounce back
- Aching, heaviness, or a tight feeling in the calves
- Visible varicose veins, skin discoloration, or slow-healing skin near the ankle
- One leg noticeably larger than the other, especially with pain or warmth (see a doctor promptly)
Why it matters
Long-standing swelling can lead to skin damage and venous ulcers that are hard to heal once they open. Treating the underlying vein disease early usually prevents this cascade.
Leg swelling can also reflect heart failure or kidney disease. A brief cardiovascular evaluation — including a physical exam, ultrasound, and basic bloodwork — tells us which system is driving it.
How we treat it
Venous ultrasound and diagnostic workup
Bedside ultrasound identifies reflux (leaky valves) in specific veins and rules out a blood clot.
Endovenous ablation (thermal or non-thermal vein closure)
In-office, catheter-based procedure that closes the diseased vein. Most patients walk out the same day.
