Coronary angioplasty and stenting in Miami

Catheter-based angioplasty and stent placement to reopen narrowed or blocked coronary arteries and restore blood flow to the heart muscle. Doctors also call it PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention).

What it is

The procedure begins like a cardiac catheterization: a thin tube is guided from the wrist or groin to the heart’s arteries. A small balloon is inflated at the narrowed spot (angioplasty). Then a stent — a small mesh scaffold — is placed to hold the artery open.

Who it is for

It is for people with coronary artery disease causing chest pain, reduced blood flow, or risk of heart attack.

The bar for offering a procedure is high: symptoms, imaging, and shared decision-making all have to line up. Not every narrowing needs a stent. Many are treated with medication and lifestyle changes.

How it works

What happens on the day

  1. 01

    Preparation

You follow the fasting and medication instructions our team gives you, and arrange a ride home.

  2. 02

    Local anesthesia and light sedation

The procedure is performed through a small radial (wrist) or femoral (groin) catheter access site. Most patients are awake but comfortable.

  3. 03

    Balloon and stent

The artery is imaged with contrast dye, the balloon widens the narrowing, and the stent is placed.

  4. 04

    Observation

Most patients recover quickly with a short observation period.

  5. 05

    Follow-up

Medication and cardiovascular risk-factor management follow. Medications after stenting protect the result.

Our surgery center

Coronary stenting in an outpatient surgery center

On May 13, 2026, amavita performed a coronary stent procedure at its Kendall ambulatory surgery center (ASC) — the first cardiovascular ASC in Miami-Dade County. The procedure was led by Dr. Pedro Martinez-Clark.

ASC-based PCI is appropriate only for selected, well-screened patients. For appropriate candidates it means same-day discharge with no overnight hospital stay, a smaller facility than a large hospital cath lab, and the same interventional cardiology team from start to finish.

Other patients have the procedure in a hospital. Dr. Martinez-Clark has attending privileges at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital and Jackson Memorial. Where yours is done is decided with you at the consultation.

Questions about coronary stenting

Am I a candidate for a stent at the surgery center instead of a hospital?
ASC-based PCI is appropriate only for selected, well-screened patients. If you are being treated for stable coronary artery disease and want to know whether you may be a candidate for outpatient PCI at our Kendall facility, call our practice at (305) 249-5666.
I was told I need bypass surgery. Can I get a second opinion?
Yes. Amavita frequently provides cardiovascular second opinions for patients who have been advised to undergo open-heart surgery or coronary bypass — situations where a minimally invasive alternative may be available. Bring your imaging and recent records to your consultation.
Will I need medicine afterward?
Yes. Medications after stenting protect the result, and a structured plan for risk-factor control is what makes the benefit last. Your cardiologist tells you which medicines and for how long.
Do you accept my insurance?

Medicare and most insurance plans accepted — we confirm your coverage before the visit. See the plans we accept.
