When an echocardiogram may be recommended
An echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) is one of the tests your cardiologist may recommend, depending on your symptoms and risk factors. People often ask about it when they have:
- A heart murmur or a known valve problem
- Shortness of breath or swelling in the legs
- An irregular heartbeat such as atrial fibrillation
- A doctor who asked for a look at how the heart is pumping
Already had an echocardiogram somewhere else? Bring the report, and the images on disc if possible.

02
The ultrasound
A small probe is moved over your chest with gel. It shows the chambers and valves of your heart as it beats.

Results explained
Your cardiologist goes over the results with you in plain language and explains what comes next.
