What we mean by 'heart disease'

‘Heart disease’ is an umbrella term. The most common form is coronary artery disease, in which cholesterol-rich plaque narrows the arteries that feed the heart muscle. When flow is significantly reduced, patients feel chest pressure with exertion (angina); when a plaque ruptures and a clot forms, the result is a heart attack.

Other important categories include arrhythmias (electrical problems such as atrial fibrillation), heart-valve disease, cardiomyopathies (diseases of the heart muscle itself), and heart failure — a syndrome in which the heart cannot pump or fill efficiently. Vascular disease outside the heart, especially peripheral artery disease, often coexists and predicts cardiac risk.

Risk factors you can and can't change

You cannot change your age, sex assigned at birth, or family history. What you can influence is substantial: blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, tobacco exposure, sleep quality, physical activity, and dietary pattern.

The single most powerful lever for most adults is treating high blood pressure early. Untreated hypertension silently damages arteries, the heart muscle, and the kidneys for years before symptoms appear.

Warning signs and symptoms

Classic chest pain during exertion is a red flag, but many patients — especially women, older adults, and people with diabetes — present atypically: unusual fatigue, shortness of breath, jaw or arm discomfort, nausea, or lightheadedness.

Palpitations that come with dizziness or fainting, or an episode of sudden severe chest pressure lasting more than a few minutes, warrant emergency evaluation. Call 911. Do not drive yourself.

How cardiologists evaluate your heart

A first visit usually includes a detailed history, physical exam, EKG, and often an echocardiogram to look at the heart's structure and pump function. Depending on your risk, we may recommend a stress test, coronary calcium score, or advanced imaging.

The goal is not to order every test — it is to build a picture accurate enough to guide treatment. Good cardiology is as much about ruling problems out as ruling them in.

The treatment landscape today

Modern therapy blends lifestyle change, medication, and — when needed — procedures. Statins, blood-pressure medications, and newer therapies (including SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 agonists in the right patients) dramatically reduce cardiovascular events.

When arteries are severely narrowed, minimally invasive catheter-based procedures such as angiography and stenting can restore blood flow with same-day discharge in many cases. Structural procedures (valve repair or replacement) are increasingly done through small incisions or the femoral artery.

When to see a cardiologist

Consider scheduling a consultation if any of the following apply. Early evaluation is often simpler, less invasive, and more effective than waiting for symptoms to progress.

  • Chest pain, pressure, or tightness — especially with exertion or shortness of breath.
  • Palpitations, fainting spells, or a heart rhythm that feels irregular.
  • Leg pain when walking, non-healing wounds, or new leg swelling.
  • Family history of early heart disease, or personal history of high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol.
  • You want a proactive, preventive evaluation and a personalized plan.
