Who it is for
Vein treatment is for people whose leg veins are not returning blood well — a problem called chronic venous insufficiency. You may notice:
- Bulging, twisted varicose veins
- Aching, heaviness, or throbbing in the legs, especially after standing
- Ankle swelling that gets worse through the day
- Skin discoloration or itching near the ankle
- A sore near the ankle that is slow to heal
It starts with an ultrasound
Venous duplex ultrasound maps which veins are leaking and confirms the pattern of reflux (backward flow) driving your symptoms. It also rules out a blood clot. The study is quick, painless, and done in the office.
The ultrasound decides the treatment. Some patients need only compression stockings and follow-up.
How a leaking vein is closed
Closing the diseased vein sends blood through healthy veins instead. This replaces older vein-stripping surgery.
Endovenous thermal ablation (radiofrequency or laser)
Closes the diseased vein from the inside with heat energy through a tiny catheter.
Non-thermal vein closure (medical adhesive or foam)
Closes veins without heat — an option for patients where thermal ablation is less suitable.
How it works
What happens on the day of a vein closure
-
01
At the surgery center, under local anesthesia
The skin is numbed. You are awake. Most patients describe only mild pressure.
-
02
A tiny catheter
Using ultrasound to guide it, the doctor passes a thin catheter into the vein through a tiny access point.
-
03
The vein is closed
With heat, or with medical adhesive or foam, depending on what suits your vein.
-
04
You walk out
Most patients walk immediately after the procedure and return to normal activities within 24–48 hours. Strenuous exercise is usually resumed within a week.
What to expect afterward
Bruising and tenderness for a few days is typical. Most patients notice reduced heaviness and swelling within a few weeks. Skin healing and discoloration improvements can take several months. Results differ from person to person.
Insurance for vein treatment
Most major insurance plans, including Medicare, cover vein closure when there are symptoms (aching, swelling, skin changes) and documented reflux on ultrasound. Purely cosmetic procedures are typically not covered. Our team verifies benefits before scheduling.
Medicare and most insurance plans accepted — we confirm your coverage before the visit. See the plans we accept.
