What Medicare patients usually pay

Doctor visits and outpatient tests are covered under Medicare Part B.

  • Original Medicare Part B. You first pay the Part B deductible, which is a set amount once each year. After that you usually pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for the visit or test. Medicare pays the rest.
  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap). If you have a Medicare Supplement plan, it may cover that 20%.
  • Medicare Advantage. These plans replace Original Medicare with a private plan. Each plan sets its own copays. The plan may also require a referral from your primary care doctor, or prior authorization (the plan's approval before a test or procedure).

This is the general rule, not a quote. We confirm your own coverage before your visit.
